Full Methodology
How HottingerSignals Works
HottingerSignals provides weekly trading signals for five markets:
SPX · OEX · RUT · XAU · NDX
Each market can receive one of three signals:
BUY · SELL · NO SIGNAL
When a BUY or SELL signal is issued, the trade has a predefined Target
and Stop Loss.
Target & Stop
Each market has its own Target and Stop Loss.
For example:
INDEX
TARGE
T STOP
^SPX 1200 -500
^OEX 105 -45
^RUT 115 -60
^XAU 100 -16
^NDX 1200 -500
Targets and Stops are measured in index points.
The Target and Stop define the maximum positive or negative result
used when either level is reached during the trading week.
How Weekly Results Are Calculated
When a BUY or SELL signal is issued, the trade is entered at the Monday
Open.
There are three possible outcomes:
1. Target is reached
If the Target is reached during the week, the trade is recorded at the
Target value.
2. Stop Loss is reached
If the Stop Loss is reached during the week, the trade is recorded at the
Stop Loss value.
3. Neither Target nor Stop is reached
If neither the Target nor Stop is reached during the week, the trade is
closed at the Friday Close.
For a BUY signal:
Result = Friday Close − Monday Open
For a SELL signal:
Result = Monday Open − Friday Close
All results are reported in index points.
Example
Suppose an OEX BUY signal has:
Target = +105 points
Stop Loss = −45 points
If OEX rises 105 points from the Monday Open during the week, the
result is:
+105 points
If OEX falls 45 points from the Monday Open during the week, the
result is:
−45 points
If neither level is reached, the result is based on the difference between
the Monday Open and Friday Close.
No Signal
A NO SIGNAL means that HottingerSignals did not issue a BUY or SELL
signal for that market during that week.
No trade or result is recorded for a No Signal week.
Historical Backtesting
